Small, oval-shaped legumes that are smaller than both Cannellini and Butter Beans with a mild flavour and creamy texture which are widely used in soups, stews, casseroles, and baked bean dishes due to their excellent ability to absorb flavours, or to make homemade baked beans if you fancy the challenge. Also known as navy beans, they are high in protein, fibre, and essential nutrients, making them a nutritious addition to a balanced diet while supporting digestion and heart health.
These beans originated in the Americas, where they were cultivated by indigenous peoples for centuries before being introduced to Europe by Spanish explorers. They became popular in both European and American cuisine, particularly in British baked beans and French cassoulet. Today, navy beans are grown worldwide in temperate climates.
Cooking Instructions
Soak the beans in plenty of water overnight for 8 to 12 hours to reduce cooking time and enhance their texture. After soaking, drain and rinse the beans. Then, boil them in fresh water over medium heat for 60 to 90 minutes, or until they are tender. Finally, drain the beans and season them to your liking.
