Pearl barley is a type of barley grain that has been processed to remove its tough outer hull and polished to reduce the bran layer. This results in a softer texture and a shorter cooking time compared to hulled barley or other whole-grain varieties.
Mild in flavor with a slightly nutty taste, it holds up well in soups, stews, and grain salads, and can also be used as a simple side dish. While some of the fiber content is reduced during processing, pearl barley still offers a good source of nutrients and makes for a versatile addition to everyday cooking.
Cooking Instructions
Rinse before use. No need to soak. Rinse 175g under cold water, then simmer with 700ml of water or stock for 25–30 minutes, until tender. Drain any excess liquid and fluff with a fork. Pearl barley has a soft texture and mild, nutty flavour—ideal in soups, salads, or as a side.
